The First Surfer in Morocco

More on Obama later today, obviously. But I need to revive a post about my last push for an elusive surf-book fact: I’m looking for the name of a U.S. serviceman who first paddled a surfboard out in Morocco in the 1950s. The session happened, according to legend, at Mehdiya Plage, and the guy in question was stationed at Port Lyautey between 1957 and about 1960. He probably built his own board out of balsa wood, and he would have been the first person ever to surf Morocco, period. If anyone has any information, e-mail me or post your story over here.

UPDATE: The View from Fez explains how to make Moroccan mint tea.
