He did exactly the right thing, with the same brusque unsentimentality he wielded as attorney general. His quick resignation was an auto-da-fé that just took the logic of his career to its obvious (and quick) conclusion. He thought people should obey the law; “I can, and will, ask no less of myself.”

Politicians shouldn’t be hounded for their sex lives, but for a while there in 1998 I even thought Clinton could have stepped aside out of simple dignity. If he had, come to think of it, President Gore might have had a future.
