I’m happy to announce a deal with Bloomsbury to publish a book of mine about surfing, probably in 2010. A (very early) sample from the book can be found on American newsstands in the Atlantic Monthly, which is running my piece about surfing in Munich in the January/February issue. But if you don’t or can’t subscribe to the Atlantic, for whatever reason, you can watch a Mike-narrated slide show on the Atlantic’s web site
UPDATE: The Surf Wiki below tells more about the book. I’m collecting stories about the origins of surfing in various countries, so send any surfers you know over in this general direction.

Cool. This may be enough for me to resume my Atlantic subscription.
For your next video, get an oopah band to cover some Beach Boys tunes.

standing wave on Eisbach), so I really appreciated the great photos and
dry humour of the narration (love the part about the oompah bands
colliding with the surfers at Floßlände).
CONGRATS on the deal.

Love the slideshow, esp the oompah band.
Hi Michael!
We used to know each other (a little) in SF. I read your Atlantic piece this week while stuck in the hospital overnight with my younger daughter. I actually read he entire magazine cover to cover, that’s how long we were sitting in the ER with nothing to do. (She’s fine now.)
I was pretty psyched to find someone I know in The Atlantic. It’s quite a step up from SF Weekly, eh?
After all the considerably drier content in the rest of the magazine, your piece brought a much-needed smile to my face.
